"Transcendence of the body, the vital and the mind is what our goal is; to take the challenge of going beyond our limitations."

My first marathon in N.Y. started with a dilemma. The day before the marathon I felt sick. I was feeling dizzy and my mind wasn't working! I rested and said to myself: 'Just wake up and see how you feel.' I decided to do it; to at least try, to start. But what really made me do it was that I had given an inner promise. The other thing that gave me strength was the meditation before the start.

I started slowly. I was able to run for about 10Km with short breaks. After that I started walking most of the time and running for a few minutes. I got pain in the left hip and my hand was aching, so I had to be patient, I kept saying, 'Don't think about it, just keep moving.' I was thinking I would finish in 7 hours, but I   knew I was doing my best. I was walking/running with people I wouldn't imagine being able to run a marathon, but they were doing it, because of their love, because we believe in the self-transcendence. Transcendence of the body, the vital and the mind is what our goal is; to take the challenge of going beyond our limitations. All these people gave me so much inspiration, so much happiness ~ they were trying to do it. Some were having fun, joking and laughing for hours. And there was Sri Chinmoy staying with the runners for nearly 7 hours, smiling and smiling.

Eventually I crossed the finish, sooner than I expected. I remember I couldn't speak, I just wanted to lie down.

I hope to do it better next year. A bit more training will help, I think! So, to the next marathon.

Many thanks to the helpers at the water stations. They were so enthusiastic, so encouraging.
