Congratulations to all the trophy winners in the Grand Prix series.

A cooler day and spot of rain saw 63 runners take to the start line for the longest race in the Grand Prix series (4 miles). 1st-time entrant Graham Hope Kidlington RC finished 1st in a very good time of 21.27. 1st women was Lucy Shelton of Abingdon A.C in a time of 26.30.

Notes about the point system for Grand Prix

    1) Points for finishing 1st = 10, 2nd = 9
    2) One point per race completed

In the event of a tie

    1. The runner who has done the most races takes precedent
    2. 4-mile race takes greater weighting than 3 mile race and 3 mile greater than 2 mile.

    Prizes

    • Prizes for top 7 in each category
    • Runners who missed out on top 7, but completed all three races get a 'finisher pendant.'
    • Prizes will be given out at the final race of the season on 17 June (3 miles)

Another nice evening saw a good turnout of 75 runners. The first man, in a time of 15.31, was Paul Hughes (Abingdon A.C). The fastest lady was Chloe Ridewood (Abingdon A.C.) in a time of 18.08.

    Just a few other notes

    • Thanks to Abingdon A.C. for using our race as their club championship and bringing along a great turnout
    • Unfortunately, our carefully measured Peace Mile has become more like a 0.933 mile due to the council leaving more long grass on the right hand side. To make the mile a one mile loop would mean running over long grass. We will speak to the council and see if more grass can be mowed - however, it may not happen for this year.
    • Our next race is on Mon - 4 June, 2018 4 miles. This is the last race in the Grand Prix series. Prizes will be given at our final race of the year - 18 June.
    • New for this year, there will be a small (1 point) bonus for those runners who make all three races. Next year, I will have new point system to reflect some categories are getting bigger and give reward for finishing lower down the category.

48 runners lined up for the start of our Grand Prix Series. Conditions were cool, but dry and light wind. Paul Hughes from Abingdon A.C. stormed round the course to win in a time of 15.59. The first women to finish was U/18 Lucrezia Portiguatti of St Clare's in a very good time of 18.58. It was good to see both new runners and regulars from previous years. V50 Men looks particularly competitive this year with 16 runners in that popular category.

A small change from last year is that for Grand Prix points, anyone who finishes a race will gain 0.5 points.

On Monday 29th May we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Oxford Sri Chinmoy Peace Mile. Back in May 1987, Sri Chinmoy visited Oxford and dedicated this one-mile loop to peace with the then Oxford Mayor Bill Fagg. It was one of the first Peace Mile's dedicated to the cause of peace and joins other such Peace Miles, in London, Geneva, New York and many locations around the world. Shortly before the start of the event, Devashishu Torpy recalled his experience of running in the first junior race on the inaugural day back in 1987.

Shortly before the junior race at 5.30pm, we had an hour of sustained heavy rain, which made setting up the course a little more interesting. Fortunately, the race ceased just before the start, and five intrepid young runners took to the start line for a one-mile junior race. By the adult race of 7.00pm we had near perfect conditions with still wind, warm and just enough time to dry up the standing water. Paul Hughes of Abingdon A.C. was the fastest over the three miles with a time of 16.23. The fastest lady was Lucrezia Portigliatti of St Clare's in a time of 18.45

After the race, there was a commemorative medal of the event.

Thanks to John Harvey of Abingdon A.C for many excellent photos. See also Flickr Gallery here for more.

Thanks also to Emma Moore of Abingdon A.C. who kindly brought a very nice cake for our 30th Anniversary.

It was a good turnout with 53 runners signing on for the last race of the season. Conditions were good, with the threat of rain, just holding off.

Congratulations to Matthew Rallison (Edinburgh Univ) who was first in a time of 22.35. First women was Sarah Dudgeon (Abingdon A) in a very good time of 25.50

Thanks to Graham Pickup for being the referee for all our four races this season.

Trying to work out all the Grand Prix standings straight after race was a little difficult, apologies for some mistakes creeping in. Ideally, I would take it home and sort out, but it is best to try and give all prizes on the evening.

Any mistakes or missed trophies contact me at tejvan (at) cyclinginfo.co.uk and I will endeavour to sort it.

Next season we will back with the usual calender of races in May and June.

The first race of the season was run under wet conditions. After an untypically warm May weekend, it rained throughout the evening, though at least it stayed reasonably warm. However, it didn't stop 35 interprid runners making their way to Cutteslowe Park for the first Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team race of the season.

Congratulations to Nick Wilshire of Reading who won in a time of 16.07. First women was Chloe Ridewood (Abingdon AC) 22.17. There was a good turn out from Headington, Abingdon and Oxford. Also good to welcome a few new runners to the series.

    Notes

    • Please send any corrections (Name, Club, times) to tejvan(at)cyclinginfo.co.uk. The rain did make some things a little hard to read.
    • We found a bike lock left under the tree. If it was yours, contact Tejvan and I'll try to return it.
    • Apologies for running behind schedule with registration, but I think a few runners were in the same boat. Heavy traffic, due to road works, at the Wolvercote Roundabout is likely to last all season.
    • The next race is in two weeks on May 23rd. (2 miles)

Our first race of the season took place under good weather for May. 20 runners came to Cutteslowe Park. 1st place was Dan James (Guernsey A.C) who finished in a good time of 17.38. It should be noted that his time would have been 2 minutes quicker, but he went off course whilst out in front. 2nd place and 1st Vet 40 was Kevin Hennessy of St Clare's. 3rd overall and first V50 was Alan Roberts of Vale of Aylesbury.

1st Women to finish was Chloe Ridewood (Abingdon A) - her time of 19.53 was good enough for fourth overall. 2nd Woman and first VW50 was  Gwyneth Hueter in a time of 21.50. Third women and first in category (senior women) was Lisa Sammons of Oxford City.

    Thanks for coming along.

We had some issues with marking the boundaries of the course, due to our regular post putter up not being there. But, normal service will be resumed next race on May 25th. 2 miles

Where points are tied, positions are determined by

    1. Most races competed in.
    2. Fastest time in 4 mile race
    3. Fastest time head to head

Next season there will be a slight change to the points system. If you compete in a race, but don't get in the top 5, you will gain 0.5 points.
