The first Meadows race for our 2018 summer series was held in glorious sunshine.
Alastair Masson of Edinburgh Uni Hares and Hounds (EUHH) led from the start and stormed to victory with 9.51. Corstorphine’s Stu Livingstone was with a small pack at the half way mark and was to prove the stronger finishing second in 10.17 ahead of Matt Fellbaum (EUHH) 10.22 Nick Freer just edged his HBT club mate Patryk Geirjatowyzk, for 4th although both were timed at 10.22.
Amy Frankland (EUHH) was a clear winner of the women’s race finishing in 13th place overall with 11.00 Fife AC sisters Jennifer, 11.58 and Ailsa Cruikshank, 12.16 took 2nd and 3rd. Dave Blackie was first V/50 in 10.59 from Neil McKay, 11.14 and Willie Jarvie (Portobello) 11.29. Brian Hughes Cambuslang was 1st V/60 in 11.22 and Alan Gordon (HBT) was 1st 0/70. Claire Gilchrist, was first FV50 in 14.03, from Penicuik’s Pamela Newport, 14.30.
Special mention to Tynebridge Harrier Paul O’Mara who made the trip from Newcastle and was rewarded with 6th place in a 2 mile PB. Also, without embarrassing him by naming him, the runner who started the race still wearing his bike helmet, and discarded it after the first loop at 1 mile .

As you can see from the race photos the heavens opened for our last race and everyone got totally soaked, including the race numbers!

Our 3 x 1 mile relays are always a fun filled highlight of our summer series and this year was no exception. A record ninety nine teams took part this year. All ages seemed to be represented, which made for a great family atmosphere.
Leading the way after leg one was Matthew Smith from Lasswade with a speedy 4.25. He held a 10 second lead over Corstorphine ’B’s Ewan Brown with Michael Cameron (EAC/DC squad) third, 2 seconds back. Lap 2 saw the Corstorphine Junior team, comprising the three Addison brothers, take the lead, with Andrew Addison clocking 4.31. Andrew Lawler (Edin Uni) brought the composite “DC squad” into 2nd with a 4.50 clocking. Henrik Henderson kept the Lasswade Juniors in touch in third place.
Addison recorded the fastest leg 2 lap, one second faster than Murray Strain 4.32 who had moved HBT up 6 places to 7th in the process. Lap 3 saw places change again. Calum McKenzie of Corstorphine’s 'A' team started the last leg in 6th place. Running a storming 4.19 lap he hunted down all the teams ahead of him to bring them home in 13.59, just 3 seconds ahead of David Addison who anchored the Corstorphine juniors to 2nd place overall. Roaridh Miller (Central) brought the DC squad home in 3rd, 14.06 (2nd senor team). Corstorphine B team, with Scott Pilkington, came home in 4th (3rd senior team) in14.22, showing the strength in depth at the club just now
The women's race saw Amy Frankland lead the Edin Uni Hares and Hounds team home on leg 1 in 5.28 from The Pink Panthers/EAC Juniors Katie Johnson in 5.33 and CAAC ‘s Caitlin McKenzie in third with 5.49. Sophie Collins maintained the Hairies lead with a 5.29 clocking on leg 2. Caitlin Arnott bought CAAC up into 2nd, clocking 5.31. Rebecca Grieve kept the EAC juniors in touch in third place. Leg 3 saw Katie Reynolds clock the joint fastest women's lap of 5.22 to bring the students home in 16.19. Emma Johnson clocking the same lap time to bring EAC juniors into 2nd and claim the junior team medals with 16.56. Jessica Mcleod, 5.40 brought CAAC home in 17.00 minutes for 3rd (2nd ladies team) and Kathleen Dempsey led the Team shorts/EAC ladies into 4th overall (3rd ladies team) with 18.19.
Joanna Brown in the mixed “North Berwick Browns “ team also ran 5.22 on leg 3 to tie the fastest ladies lap time.
In the keenly contested 0/50 Men’s race Gavin Noble, Dunbar, Derek Newport, Penicuik and Ian Duff bought the “Wrong Direction” team home in 16.06 ahead of PH racing teams 17.17. The composite trio of Yvonne Crilley (Lothian), Anne Peat and Sharyn Ramage (EAC) were leading WV50 team in 19.48. The Silver Foxes with Kenny Gunn-Russell, Alex Agnew, and Jim Scott were leading MV60 team.
An evergreen composite team of Willie Murray, Portobello, Keith Weston and Betty Gilchrist, both Ferranti with a combined age, allegedly, of 220 years took the 0/70 medals.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the event. Splits are all worked out manually and names entered from “hand written“ entry forms. If you spot any mistakes, please do mail us and let us know, do share/link results with your fellow runners. Please use any pics on club reports /social media, just give us a name check.
