Although a strong breeze affected the times a little, the Sri Chinmoy 5km race in Edinburgh, which incorporated the Tru Wealth Scottish Athletics 5km Road Championships, certainly lived up to its reputation of being one of the fastest in-depth 5km races in the country. In the men’s race no fewer than 19 athletes broke 15 minutes, while a further 71 broke 16 minutes; 80 broke 17 mins; 87 broke 18mins; 73 broke 19 and a further 70 dipped under 20 minutes. In total 375 men ran under the 20 minute barrier.
A large pack were still together at 3km running into the strong breeze. It was Inverclyde’s Johnny Glen who made a move around the 4km mark just as runners turned out of the breeze to have it in their backs for the final km. He maintained the momentum to the finish but was pushed hard by Lasswade’s Christian Graham and Central’s Ali Hay. Glen clocked 14.27 sec with Graham and Hay and 4th placed James Donald also dipping under 14mins 30 secs.
The women’s race was headed by former champion Annabel Simpson from Fife AC. Just like the men’s race a large pack worked together in the first half of the race. The ever improving Simpson, fresh from a recent track 5k Commonwealth Games qualifier of 15.44, then took it on and pushed hard to finish in 16.28. Edinburgh University’s Sarah Calvert was 2nd in 16:43, and Aberdeen’s Naomi Lang 3rd in 16:49. 4 women ran under 17 mins; 16 under 18 mins; 20 under 19 mins; 21 under 20 mins and a further 22 under 21mins . A total of 83 under 21 minutes
