RUN AND BECOME SELF TRANSCENDENCE 5KM.

INC. SCOTTISH 5KM ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The inaugural Scottish 5km road race championships were held on the riverside course at Silverknowes, on the shores of the River Forth, on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Changeable weather led to a strong squally shower minutes before the race start. However, as the runners assembled on the start line, the rain stopped and the wind dropped. Despite the mid week evening timing, a good quality field led to some good times. At the 2km mark there were about a dozen runners within a couple of seconds of each other but by the 4km mark this had whittled down to three. Inverclyde’s Chris McKay used his track speed (he had  recently set a 5k pb on the  track) to pull away in the final stages to win by 3 seconds from Shettleston’s Tewoldeberhan Mengisteab. Central A.C’s Ross Houston (showing no ill effects from victory in the previous weekends 20 mile Edinburgh to North Berwick race as he prepares for the upcoming Edinburgh Marathon) was a further second back. Cambuslang’s Kerry Wilson was a comfortable winner of the vets title from Stevie Cairns and Kevin Downie.

In the women’s race local Edinburgh athlete Laura Dunn took the race on in the first 2km. However, it was steeplechaser Emma Raven who came through strongly in the later stages to take the title in 16.42, 3 seconds clear of Dunn, with Fife’s Hester Dix also dipping under 16 minutes. Sue Ridley took the masters title from Jennifer Telfer. In a closely fought women's team contest Central took the spoils on countback from Edinburgh with Fife third.  Shettleston secured the men’s medals ahead of Central and HBT.
